Genetic Testing for Better Nutrition

Do you ever wonder why no matter how much you work out or diet, you can’t seem to lose weight?  Are you unhappy with your body composition?  Do you struggle with food craving or food intolerances?  Are you prone to injury during physical activity or exercise?  Your genes might be the thing to blame!

Nutrigenomics is the study of how nutrients affect our genes and genes affect our use of nutrients. East West Integrative Medicine is excited to offer personalized nutritional testing that gives insight about 45 different genes that affect metabolism, weight management, body composition, eating habits, food cravings, food intolerances, physical activity, and fitness.

Did you know that your risk of high blood pressure and heart attack is greater if you possess a certain gene variant that makes it difficult for you to metabolize caffeine?

Did you know that your success in weight loss may depend on how you structure your macronutrient consumption (proteins, fats, carbohydrates)?

The human genome consists of about 25,000 genes and all of these genes exist in different forms. These variations in our genes are the reason why we don’t all look alike. Genetic variations also determine how we metabolize and utilize the nutrients in the foods and supplements we ingest. Different variations of a gene can make us respond differently to certain components in food such as lactose in milk, gluten in bread, caffeine in coffee, along with carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Our genes are not the only side to the genetic story. The foods we eat can actually turn genes “on” and “off.”  By accessing this important information, we can 1) improve our current state of health 2) prevent disease based on own personal genetic profile.
