Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic diseases. It integrates Western medical practices with alternative and complementary medicine to provide a balanced approach to treatment. Through the use of laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques, a practitioner is able to get a clear and thorough view of what’s going on in the body without making assumptions. With this information, a practitioner can provide targeted care that is unique to the individual.

Some of the Specialty Testing at East West Integrative Medicine includes:

  • Comprehensive Food Allergy & Sensitivity Testing
  • Specialty Testing for Gastroenterology Complaints
  • Specialty Testing for Various Autoimmune Conditions
  • Genetic Testing for Hereditary Diseases
  • Complete Hormone Testing
  • Comprehensive Thyroid Assessment
  • Comprehensive Cortisol Testing

Comprehensive Food Allergy & Sensitivity Testing

Food is essential for life but it can also create a serious disharmony in your body if you are allergic or even sensitive to it. The most common symptoms of food allergies and sensitivities are upset stomach, gas, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Other symptoms include headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and skin issues.

At East West Integrative Medicine, we offer comprehensive testing for 96 of the most common foods. This test measures both true allergies and food sensitivities, which are not tested by a traditional allergist. The test is administered as a simple in-office blood draw and test results are usually available within 2 weeks. Results will be provided via email and a 15-minute consultation to discuss results is included.

Specialty Testing for Gastroenterology Complaints:

Do you commonly experience gas, bloating, abdominal pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, or loose stool?  While occasional GI upset is not abnormal, chronic signs and symptoms may be linked to an underlying disharmony that needs to be addressed.

East West Integrative Medicine offers a variety of specialty testing for the GI system including testing for:

  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Celiac Disease
  • Increased Intestinal Permeability
  • Microbiome Mapping

Specialty Testing for Various Autoimmune Conditions

Have you been from doctor-to-doctor for multiple health complaints and still don’t have a definitive diagnosis or effective treatment plan?  Have you been told that your condition is “idiopathic” or that “it’s all in your head?”

Many times, undetected autoimmune diseases can be the underlying cause of your complaints. Unfortunately, autoimmune diseases are still not understood very well by the Western medical community. Treatment options are generally limited and don’t address the root cause of the disease.

East West Integrative Medicine offers multi-tissue antibody testing for the early detection and monitoring of complex autoimmune conditions such as:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Autoimmune Diabetes, Type 1.5
  • Autoimmune diseases of the neurological system
  • Autoimmune diseases of the joints
  • Autoimmune diseases of the mucosa
  • Autoimmune reactivity to chemicals
  • Autoimmune reactivity to pathogens (viruses, bacteria, and fungus)
  • Autoimmune reactivity to wheat, gluten, gliadin, and transglutaminase

Genetic Testing for Hereditary Diseases

This test is a comprehensive panel that helps screen for and diagnoses hereditary cancers, heart conditions, neurological conditions, and rare diseases.

Complete Hormone Testing

This test is a comprehensive panel that evaluates hormone levels in urine. Abnormal hormone levels can cause many health conditions, including menstrual irregularities, infertility, menopause, fatigue, breast cancer, and osteoporosis.

Comprehensive Thyroid Assessment

The Comprehensive Thyroid Assessment is a hormone test that provides a thorough analysis of thyroid hormone metabolism. Thyroid hormones are essential and primary regulators of the body’s metabolism. The test measures central thyroid gland regulation and activity, thyroid production and secretion, thyroid conversion, and thyroid autoimmunity.

Cortisol Testing

Cortisol is a hormone our body produces in order to deal with stress. It also helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels and promotes a healthy immune system. East West Integrative Medicine offers comprehensive cortisol testing through saliva which is collected 4 times throughout the day. This provides a true reading of stress levels during 24 hours.
